ipanema live
i keep reading about these on-the-ground, as-it-happens bloggers who are way ahead of the official news sites. so i thought i would join this club, compete in the global news market. syndicate, spin, articulate. so here we go...
there are people peeing on ipanema beach! and not just guys.
and they still sell Skol here!

oh alright, maybe some more details :) -- i think they've just been having some sort of carnaval warm up. its great when you stumble upon something you never knew was going to be happening. i just moved hostel from copacabana to ipanema and had some minor hassle, so it was maybe 4.30 when i emerged to explore ipanema. heading for the beach, i wondered why the main beachfront avenida was closed to cars (usually it is full of them, all the way around rio's copious coastal frontage). didn't have to wait long to find out as the party arrived from the east. drums beating, the samba sounds filled the streets and thousands of people led and followed the parade, interspersed with beer and food sellers, plus rubbish collectors. impressive infrastructure. everything except portaloos. which kind of brings me back to those beach polluters :) I haven't seen Skol in the UK since the 80s, but here it is everywhere. and of course the Skol was the reason everyone needed a pee. and when you're at the beachfront eager to rejoin the parade, what's a carioca to do?
